It lays it all thick on the cheese and just limps along. Script is far too heavy on the talk and it rambles to the extent that it sounds like gobbledegook. Franco's direction is a far cry from his direction for 'The Disaster Artist', almost like the two films were directed by two James Franco's because it sure didn't feel like the same person. Some of the cast like Franco devour the scenery with their hamminess and some like Suki Waterhouse have far too little to do and struggle to do anything with what they're given so they look robotic and out of their depth. Jovovich aside, the acting is a dire mess. It seems that a nostalgic retro look was being attempted but it doesn't work, it needed a bigger budget and less of a time constraint to pull it off methinks. Apart from some sleek moments, both the photography and editing were far too busy and it gives the film a chaotic look. It is a shame though that the production design is not complemented particularly well. Best performance oddly enough comes from Milla Jovovich, am not saying that hers was a great performance as it wasn't particularly but at least she gives it a good go. Occasionally there is a nostalgic charm apparent in the production design, which is the one thing that looked halfway decent on a consistent level. The bad things do outweigh vastly the redeeming merits, but the not so bad things are here. In some areas, 'Future World' tried too hard and in other areas there was not enough effort seen. Was expecting budget limitations and was hoping to marginally forgive that, as not all low budget films look terrible all things considered, providing that there were signs of trying and effort was made in the other components. To me it was a complete waste of time, while not being entirely irredeemable and there are far worse films around, and waste of its idea and cast, which is just infuriating. 'Future World' turned out to be one of those films. Even when watching it with an open mind, taking into account the low budget and genuine hope that it would work, part of me was very sceptical at the same time with the low rating and negative reviews, from recent personal experience a number of films with low ratings and negative reviews have been that bad. It was not a film that was doomed before it even started. With a decent idea, James Franco directing and an interesting cast, 'Future World' did have some promise.
